Babywearing Calgary & The Elizabeth House

Over the past few months Babywearing Calgary has collected generous donations from our wonderful members. These donations were then taken to The Elizabeth House to be donated while our wonderful admin team gave some lessons to the young women and fit them with a carrier to suit their needs.

The Elizabeth house is a non-denominational residential program for at-risk pregnant or parenting youth and their babies with little or no supports and needing a safe place to live.

At Babywearing Calgary, you’ll find a lot of our members feel that carriers are a must have with a baby. Some of us can’t imagine life without one.

An update from our admins Emma and Tanya:

There were a number of moms, with children if various ages. We spoke with them about the benefits of Babywearing, and safety, then introduced them to the various carrier styles. One momma started out looking a little unimpressed and a bit frazzled. We talked about how to use a Soft Structured Carrier (SSC) and she became a lot more interested. She was so excited and couldn’t believe she got to keep it! The best part was watching them delight in the face to face connection the carriers brought. Several others were over the moon with the Mei Tais they chose (a popular choice). All in all it was a great night. Thank you all for your donations and work in this!!

We can’t thank our members enough for all their generous donations. We truly hope that the mom’s we’ve helped will continue to babywear and experience the benefits.

How did you get introduced to baIMG_4797bywearing?

I first started babywearing in 2012 when I had my first child. My father was actually the person who purchased me my first baby carrier. Our son was very colicky and wanted to stay very close to me. My father thought that it would help me get a lot of stuff done around the house if I could wear my baby.
How long have you been babywearing?
I have been baby / toddler wearing for 4 years
How has it changed your life?
Baby wearing has change my life by allowing me to do my normal day to day activities while holding my baby. I’ve been able to accomplish the smallest chores, to hosting events to climbing mountains with my little ones close by.

Have you traveled and found babywearing helped?
We haven’t been outside of the country baby wearing but we have done a lot of traveling within the country; where a baby carrier has helped a great deal. We can easily pack up and go and not have to worry about space in our vehicle for a stroller.
Has there been anyone in your life that has made babywearing click for you or been a big help?

I would say the Almighty Internet. I can easily Google videos and read blogs to better my baby wearing ability. Joining baby wearing Calgary has also been a huge influence in our babywearing journey.

What is one piece of advice you would offer about babywearing?
Practice makes perfect.
What is your favourite carrier?IMG_6131
I loved our soft, squishy Natibaby ring sling for carrying my newborns & have fallen in love with my Lenny Lamb SSC now that my baby is a bit bigger.

What is your favourite carry?
I love carrying my baby in the front so that I can easily kiss her little head. I really like the look of the poppins hip carry and would try to master that if I ever purchased a woven wrap. If I need to get some heavy duty housework done, I prefer a back carry.
If you could have any wrap/carrier (your ultimate DISO) what would it be?
Natibaby Luna Selene 🌙 Either a size 5 or wrap conversion SSC
